Fly Without Fear Of Flights: Fear of flying overcomed within 5-6 sessions of hypnosis

Holidays are very precious and yearned for by each and everyone. The vision of sunny beaches, luxurious suntans keep us going until the day we can fly off somewhere where the sun is shining brightly and the sea is as blue as the sky!The ability to dream of promotions, achievements even if it involves flying overseas; nowadays flying is just a normal part of personal and professional life so having a fear of flying, a flying phobia is a big blockage between you and your dreams....

For some of us the freedom to explore new places or prospect of flying due to work bring back old fears/phobias - especially if the plans involve taking a plane and staying on it for a few hours;for others the image of being at the airport or the sound of the plane taking off can trigger fear. It doesn't matter if the airport is next door and quiet; it doesn't matter if the whole family is together. Sadly enough it does not matter even if we have travelled to the longed place already several times in our fantasy; when it comes to preparing ourselves to take a flight to make the dream come true, the same old fear of flying grips and we grope for breath just at the mere thought of stepping onto that first step of the ladder taking us inside the plane or should I say…..inside the airport?

Fear of flying affects roughly one in every five people. Some people have to travel regularly due to their work and this fear can be a very unfortunate block to their performance and progression; others have to face their fears only when the holiday plans are being made and they face the terrible guilt of being the spoiling element in the fantastic holiday dreams.

Reassurance does not work, at least not for long; figures and statistics proving the safety and reliability of the plane company do not help either; lots of activities aboard does help for a little while as a form of distraction. Other methods may or may not work. Why is it that ultimately everything in the logic gets hijacked when the senses (ears, sights or sensations ) imagine flying? why is it that the feared plane, flight is looming into the awareness days before or shall i say weeks before like a monster, taking away your safety even in your own house?

What is the one single factor that everyone with a fear of flying/flight phobia will agree on? It is all in the mind, in the imagination!!!! your relatives have taunted you with it “shake it ! It's all in your head!” you have tormented yourself “I have to stop being so silly; it is all in my head!!” The fear is obviously not logical because every person with a phobia knows their fear is irrational. they do not need someone else telling them they are going to be okay on the flight, but their "knowing" does not convince their heartbeats, their panicky muscles or dry throat when imagining the flight..

Consciously, you know there is nothing to fear. But fears are usually triggered not by the logic but in fact by the primitive brain, the amygdala! that part of the brain is also called the reptitlian brain because it is similar to the brain of an animal; geared to react to danger signals, signals which are taken at a sensory level. All of us have had the experience of smelling smoke, or feeling heat on our skin before the logic realise we have forgotten the over or cooker on!! the amygdala gets on alert at any sign of danger and hijack the logic because it wants us to run for our life, fight for our life and rationalise about it later, once it feels safe again; once in safety the amygdala allows the logic to process the fear, understand it or even talk and laugh about it.

To understand the power of the Unconscious mind read “the paradox of the unconscious mind” and phobias. The beauty of the human mind is that we also react with the amygdala to "perceived" threats!! so if my brain has developped a fear of dogs because of direct experience of being bitten, or hearing about a loved one being bitten, my amygdala develops a fear trigger to dogs or being bitten. Thus as soon as i am near a dog, hear a dog barking, my amygdala will trigger the adrenaline rush that has only one message "get back to safety!" the same trigger can get attached to planes, flying or being out of control.

A person with a phobia or fear of flying or any other phobia will have a red alert button on the lookout for the feared object; they avoid anything that can remind them of the feared plane or object and that only confirms for the amygdala that its fear is valid. Every time you avoid thinking about a plane or talking about it, the amygdala reinforces the avoidance response as the safest response and that becomes the chosen coping mechanism.

My clients for hypnotherapy with fear of flying/flying phobia are people for whom avoidance has worked in the past but now has become a blockage between them and their dreams for freedom, adventure or promotion. They wish to be able to fly feeling in control, feeling relaxed or at least safe enough to not get anxiety attacks or panic attacks on the plane. For some their fears are only a few years old and for others their fear of flying has been pestering them for decades.

Basically a hypnotherapist help the person with a fear of flying access the unconscious mind(another name for the amygdala in the hypnosis profession)that part of your brain that you feel is irrational but you just cannot control it; then the hypnotherapist's job is to help you deprogram all the triggers that make you jump and react with fear/ terror while someone else is calm at the sight, sound or feeling of a plane going by. We also help your mind to reprogram more constructive patterns of thoughts about flights, flying and other such phobias that you may have.

The same theory applies for all the other sort of phobias that you or someone you know may be suffering:

The list is vast as human beings have a vast array of fears and yet they are each unique in how their minds react to their individual triggers. Clients are people who sometimes understand the origin of their fears and sometimes have no clue why and how they developped their fears. In my experience of eight years as a Hypnotherapist in Reading, Wokingham, Woodley, Berkshire I have worked with all sorts of fears and found that five to six sessions have sufficed in making the person react to the fear stimulus with a more composed and calm attitude, albeit some normal healthy stress!
